Background The Specialist Certificate in Strategic Communications and Engagement has been designed specifically for communications professionals working in and with government by the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSHSS) at the University of Melbourne, and was developed in consultation with the Department of State Development Business and Innovation (DSDBI) in Victoria.
Course Description The Specialist Certificate draws on key GSHSS academic staff as well as industry and government experts and aims to enhance participant's communications and media management skills, with a particular focus on the relationship between communications, engagement and policy development. The Specialist Certificate can be delivered in intensive or distributed modes and customised further to specific organisational requirements and international contexts.

The Specialist Certificate involves a strong focus on the diversification and transformation of media and communications industries and the emergence of new and innovative forms, formats and forums in public communication and engagement.

At the same time, the course will provide grounding in contemporary communications theory and enable participants to develop their skills in writing for government.

Assessment Each subject consists of 5000 words assessment including reports, exams and group work.
Pathways to Further Study Graduates may progress to a range of other graduate coursework programs, including the Master of Public Administration, Master of Public Policy and Management, Master of Global Media Communication and Executive Master of Arts.

Entry Requirements An undergraduate degree, or equivalent and the applicant's submitted statement of intent in seeking entry.


At least five years full time documented professional experience in communications and engagement at a senior level, which demonstrates the capacity to successfully undertake the course and the applicant's submitted statement of intent in seeking entry.

Fee Inclusions Fees include tuition, course materials and access to on-line resources & catering (morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea) during intensive delivery of subjects.

As enrolled students of the University of Melbourne, students have access to a range of facilities and amenities provided by the University of Melbourne.
FEE HELP Fee-Help is a loan from the Australian Government to cover tuition fees and is available to Australian Citizens only.

Delivery Venue Classes will take place in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Science's custom designed teaching spaces. Students will also have access to the Graduate School's state-of-the-art study spaces.
