Jan Bagley & Bruce Herbes
Winners of the City of Bayside Built Environment Award 2017
Best Ecologically Sustainable House
Jan completed a foundation course at Goldsmiths, University of London followed by an arts degree in three dimensional design at Kingston Polytechnic. She worked in large architectural practices in London, Hong Kong, Sydney and Melbourne for 25 years before joining Bruce at Visualvoice in 2009.
Sustainability is at the core of both Bruce and Jan’s professional and personal lives. The dream of designing and building their own sustainable house became a reality in 2013 when the ideal site, a 5 minute walk to shops, library and train station was found in Hampton, Victoria.
Sustainability was the number one consideration in all aspects of the build. The house has old school features such as wide eaves and verandahs and single hung windows to maximise natural cross ventilation alongside the latest sustainable building materials including SIPS external wall construction, Phasechange for stabilising the internal temperature and recycled plastic decking.
The house has won the City of Bayside 2017 Built Environment Award for the Best Ecologically Sustainable House.
