Background The Graduate Programs in Surgical Education are a suite of qualifications co-badged with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and offered by the University of Melbourne through the Department of Surgery, Austin Health.

The programs' content recognises the unique challenges that characterise the clinical settings and the advanced technologies that are increasingly important in surgery and surgical training. Effective teaching skills are essential attributes for educators responsible for training the next generation of surgeons in the complex sets of skills required for safe surgical practice.

The programs allow surgeons to gain formal skills in teaching and educational scholarship. The content reflects critical issues in the broader education community together with specific challenges for surgical education - the role of regulatory bodies, balancing clinical service with training, ethical imperatives for simulation-based education, managing under performing trainees, developing professionalism, safer working conditions including safe hours and more.
Description The Graduate Diploma in Surgical Education comprises of the successful completion of the first four compulsory subjects PLUS 50 points of study from the nested suite of subjects that lead to the Master of Surgical Education qualification.

NOTE: Students intending to enrol in the Master program must include Research Methods in Surgical Education as one of their electives.

Assessment Each subject is formally assessed to meet the requirements of University accreditation. Assessment is designed to be practical and relevant.
Target Audience Fellows, Trainees and non-surgeons who contribute to surgical education programs and have an interest in increasing their capacity to deliver surgical education including Surgeons, Veterinary Surgeons, Clinical Proceduralist, Obstetricians, Gynaecologists and other relevant health professionals.

Delivery Mode The program is delivered part-time, with students expected to enrol in 2 subjects each semester. However, it is possible to undertake just one subject per semester. All subjects (with the exception of the Minor Thesis) will be taught using multiple delivery modes. This will include one full day (8 hours) workshop plus self-paced learning activities (e.g. webinars, moderated interactive discussions, and tutorials) spread over 13-week semesters. The self-paced learning activities will be accessed through an online learning management system. Students should expect to commit approximately 8 - 10 hours per week to each subject. This includes formal learning activities, reading and private study.
Entry Requirements All applications for entry will be assessed by the Selection Committee who will evaluate the applicant's ability to successfully pursue the program. The following criteria specify entry requirements:
  1. A Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery or equivalent qualification (such asdentistry, veterinary medicine etc.) plus
  2. At least two years of relevant clinical work experience. It is important that students have an appreciation of clinical practice before they commence studies for this course;
  3. Meet the English language requirements of the University of Melbourne. International Medical Graduates are also expected to meet the English language requirements of the Medical Board of Australia (an IELTS score of 7 in all four elements - reading, writing, listening and speaking).
  4. Successful completion of the Graduate Certificate (4 core subjects) or equivalent.
The Selection Committee may conduct interviews and tests and may call for referee reports or employer references to assist in the selection process.

Pathways to Further Study Students who completed the Graduate Diploma in Surgical Education can gain a full credit (100 points) towards Master of Surgical Education.
Course Fees $2,940 per 12.5 point subject in 2017. Fees are subject to an annual increase.
Fee Inclusions Fees include tuition, course materials and access to on-line resources & catering (morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea) during intensive delivery of subjects.

As enrolled students of the University of Melbourne, students have access to a range of facilities and amenities provided by the University of Melbourne.
FEE HELP Fee-Help is a loan from the Australian Government to cover tuition fees and is available to Australian Citizens only.
