Background The introduction of echocardiography has made a dramatic impact on patient management in the peri-operative, critical care, emergency medicine, surgery and internal medicine environments.

The Graduate Certificate of Clinical Ultrasound course is designed to cater to different craft groups and in subject two the student is able to choose to study either the ICU module or the anaesthesia module.

At completion of the Certificate, students can choose to exit or proceed with the Graduate Diploma of Clinical Ultrasound. Similarly, at completion of the Diploma students can undertake the Masters qualification.
Description The Certificate course has a focus on basic transthoracic echocardiography an introduction to transesophageal echocardiography and surface ultrasound uses, such as vascular access, nerve blocks and trauma ultrasound.
Teaching team The Clinical Ultrasound Group at the University of Melbourne, led by Professors Alistair Royse and Colin Royse.
Delivery Mode The course is 1 semester full-time or 2 semesters part-time via distance education. A semester duration is 12 weeks. For students completing full-time there will be four subjects per semester, and for part-time, two subjects per semester. Subjects must be taken in sequence.
Entry Requirements To be eligible to apply, you must meet the following entry requirements:
  • An undergraduate medical degree in English, sufficient to practise as a medical practitioner, such as MBBS or equivalent degree.

  • Meet the English language requirements of the University of Melbourne. International Medical Graduates are also expected to meet the English language requirements of the Medical Board of Australia (an IELTS score of 7 in all four elements - reading, writing, listening and speaking).

Please attach supporting documentation to your application. The supporting documentation required is an academic transcript, CV/Resume (evidence of two years professional experience) and proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate or passport.

  • Subject 2: MEDI90054 Ultrasound guided procedures (12.5 points)
  • Subject 3: MEDI90050 Doppler echocardiography (12.5 points)
  • Subject 4: MEDI90051 Ventricular function (12.5 points)

Assessment There are two components that make up the examination aspect of the courses.
  • Submission of all self-assessment forms (20% of the overall grade)
  • Submission of exam for each subject (80% of the overall grade)
Other Information Broadband internet access is a course requirement as the course is administered online and via email.

Course Fees Fees for 2018 are $2,150 per 12.5 point subject. Fees are subject to an annual increase.
Course Delivery Students have the flexibility to study in their own time and location. Program materials can be accessed through the eLearning Education app on tablets with iOS, Android or Windows systems. Once the program materials have been downloaded on tablets, all the interactive media content can be viewed even when offline (however, internet access is required periodically to login or re-verify login credentials). Program materials can also be accessed online using a web browser.
