|Background||Clinical Research is a component of medical and health research that focuses on acquiring knowledge that can be used to improve the understanding of human disease to aid in the prevention and treatment of illness and for promoting good health. |
Clinical research has underpinned significant advances in medicine, in the last decade alone, an anti-cancer vaccine was developed to prevent cervical cancer caused by human papillomaviruses, a vaccine for the prevention of nicotine addiction has been developed and is well advanced in clinical testing, gene therapy and stem cell treatments have entered clinical evaluation, researchers have demonstrated the potential to 'grow' transplantable human organs, new genes have been identified in breast cancer and leukaemia, advances in keyhole surgery with the non-invasive removal of a kidney via the navel, the emergence of epigenetics - studying inheritable changes in appearance or gene expression without r elated changes in the DNA, research is well developed for a bionic eye and other intelligent prostheses.
Further medical advances will be underpinned by professional and rigorous approaches to clinical research.
The Graduate Programs in Clinical Research were established to provide a professional and structured clinical research training program for clinical research professionals. They provide an integrated suite of subjects and programs that build the foundations of clinical research and progress to addressing the specific requirements of globally significant medical challenges, such as Oncology and Neuroscience, which are then consolidated through completion of a major research thesis.
|Course Description||The Specialist Certificate in Clinical Research (Neuroscience) is offered through two subjects, each delivered intensively over a week by a team with expertise across the breadth of clinical neuroscience research. |
Week 1 - Topics covered include: clinical trials, genetics, mechanisms of disease, epidemiology, health economics, rehabilitation and translation into clinical practice.
Week 2 - Builds on clinical research methodology and skills acquired in Week 1. A major emphasis is on cutting-edge human brain imaging techniques.
|Delivery Mode||The two subjects are delivered over two consecutive weeks of intensive face to face delivery. The course is only available on a part-time study basis. However, the intensive delivery mode enables participation from interstate and overseas.|
|Who Should Apply||The Specialist Certificate in Clinical Research (Neuroscience) is aimed at people currently working or studying in neurology, psychiatry, neurosurgery, radiology, neuro-rehabilitation or other health services. This course will prove useful to advanced trainees, new or emerging clinical researchers, allied health and clinical trial coordinators. More experienced clinical researchers, scientists or those working in the pharmaceutical industry are also welcome.|
|Subjects||The Specialist Certificate in Clinical Research (Neuroscience) requires completion of 25 points of coursework. |
Students will complete:
Clinical Neuroscience Research (12.5 points) - This subject covers the frontiers in clinical neuroscience research and provides expert briefings on the current research questions in epilepsy, intellectual disability and autism, stroke and multiple sclerosis as well as research methods in clinical neurological genetics, how animal models inform clinical neuroscience research, research methods in clinical neuropharmacology, brain development, neuroplasticity and neurotrophic factors research and research methods in neurodegenerative disorders.
Neuroimaging for Clinical Research (12.5 points) - This subject provides expert briefings on the current research questions in dem entias, movement disorders, schizophrenia and bipolar disorders and has a major emphasis on cutting-edge human imaging techniques, particularly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including a practical demonstration of language functional MRI, structural and functional MR imaging and clinical research applications, analysis of MR imaging as well as magnetic resonance spectroscopy and research applications.
|Assessment||Each subject is formally assessed to meet the requirements of University accreditation. Assessment is designed to be practical and relevant to industry professionals.|
|Additional Information||Each week of the course can be taken separately as a short course, with or without assessment.|
|Academic and Teaching Team||The Academic Coordinator for the course is Laureate Professor Sam Berkovic AC MD FAA FRACP FRS. Professor Berkovic is an internationally recognised clinical neurologist and researcher. He is an Australia Fellow and Laureate Professor in the Department of Medicine Austin Health/Northern Health at The University of Melbourne, Director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Austin Health and the Epilepsy Research Centre at The University of Melbourne. |
Sam is supported by presenters drawn from the The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, a multi-disciplinary clinical research group focusing on producing innovative patient-centered research, training and education into stroke, epilepsy and other neurological disorders, as well as from Austin Health and other leading Melbourne hospitals.
Past presenters have included: Professors Geoff Donnan, Graeme Jackson, Alan Connelly, Trevor Kilpatrick, Terry O'Brien, Ingrid Scheffer, Christop her Rowe, Richard Macdonell, Amanda Thrift, Associate Professors Julie Bernhardt, Leonid Churilov, Helen Dewey, David Howells and Steven Petrou.
|Entry Requirements||An undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification in medicine, an allied health profession, science or social science which is recognised by the University as evidence of adequate preparation for the course plus documented evidence of at least the equivalent of one year's full-time relevant professional work experience in a medical, scientific or allied health environment and an explanation of why the course is to be undertaken. |

|Course Fees||Fees in 2017 are $5700 ($2,850 per subject). Fees are subject to an annual increase.|
