These are the results of applying positive psychology in education. Many schools are now introducing positive principles to nurture the whole person with both students and staff.The Professional Certificate in Education (Positive Education) provides a foundation in the science of positive psychology and its application in education settings. It brings together the science and practice of positive psychology to promote optimal learning environments.
Course Description The Professional Certificate in Education (Positive Education) provides a foundation in the science of positive psychology and its application in education settings. The course is designed for educators, youth workers, school counsellors, health professionals and administrators who are working in schools and other educational settings. Participants will learn about different theories of wellbeing and flourishing, examine core positive education constructs, and explore positive interventions that can be used in learning environments to build wellbeing and resilience in students and staff. The course also explores how educators can initiate and lead systematic change across educational communities, wellbeing policy, and the role of measurement and evaluation. Activities and assignments help participants to apply the different concepts and strategies to their own educational setting.

Subjects The course consists of two subjects:

EDUC90806 - Introduction to Positive Education
Introduces the science of positive psychology as it applies to education. It looks at the brain-science underpinning learning and development and it introduces a range of wellbeing frameworks including PERMA (positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment). In addition, a number of important factors associated with well-being such as resilience, hope and gratitude will be discussed.

EDUC90807 - Building Positive Education Communities
Explores how educators can initiate and lead positive change, and develop an evidence base to demonstrate impact, ensuring that change is embedded in their learning institution. Positive change will be discussed in relation to curriculum and pedagogy as well as to whole school approaches. Methods of evaluating change and strategies for influencing policy will also be examined.
Assessment Each subject is formally assessed to meet the requirements of University accreditation. Assessment is designed to be practical and relevant to industry professionals.

Pathways to Further Study Successful completion of this course may provide credit towards the Master of Education at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education. It may also assist with entry to the Masters of Applied Positive Psychology, although it cannot be included as credit towards that program.

All graduates would be entitled to submit an application for credit, and the relevant course coordinator may then grant that credit.

Entry Requirements Entry requirements: You must have one of the following to be eligible to apply:
  • an approved degree and an approved teaching qualification, or
  • an approved four-year teaching degree, or
  • an approved equivalent qualification which is recognised by the Faculty as evidence of adequate preparation for the course and a record of professional or teaching experience in a field and at a level acceptable to the Melbourne Graduate School of Education.
You do not need to be teaching currently, but a background in teaching is recommended. Please attach supporting documentation to your application. The supporting documentation required is an academic transcript, CV and proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate or passport.
Course Fees The 2018 course fees are $6,432.00.
Fee Inclusions Fees include tuition, course materials, catering and access to on-line resources during intensive delivery of subjects.  As enrolled students of the University of Melbourne, students have access to a range of facilities and amenities provided by the University of Melbourne.
Fee Exclusions Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) according to the Australian Parliament legislation October 2011, the university is required to charge an annual compulsory Student Services and Amenities Fee to Commonwealth Supported students (CSP students) from 2012. This fee will be invoiced separately to tuition fees by the University of Melbourne, and covers a number of services available to you as an enrolled award student of the University. The SSAF is calculated on the per-annum basis and charged depending on your enrolment load (part time or full time).
FEE HELP Fee-Help is a loan from the Australian Government to cover tuition fees and is available to Australian Citizens only.
