UoM Commercial Ltd is a public company limited by shares. It is a fully owned subsidiary of the University of Melbourne.

UoM Commercial Ltd (UoMC) is a public company limited by shares. The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the University of Melbourne. Originally named Melbourne University Private Ltd, it was approved to operate as a university on 14 July 1998. This approval to operate as a university was extended for a further five years effective 15 July 2003. In 2006 the decision was made to no longer operate as a university and the licence was returned to the Victorian Government.

On 1 July 2002, all of the activities and employees of Melbourne Enterprises International Ltd were transferred to Melbourne University Private and the assets and liabilities of Melbourne Enterprises International Ltd were rolled up into Melbourne University Private.

Following the decision to no longer operate as a university, the name of the company was changed from Melbourne University Private Limited to UMEE Ltd on 1 January 2006.  Then it was changed to UoM Commercial Ltd on 19 July 2010.

The company was established in 1998 for the charitable purpose of advancing education including, without limitation, advancing the educational objects of the University of Melbourne. Its objects are summarised as to undertake research, development, consultancy, educational or other programs or services for commercial organisations, public bodies or individuals (through the School of Melbourne Custom Programs or any other approved schools or other academic units of The University of Melbourne); aid or engage in the development or promotion of university research and the application or use of the results of such research; operate businesses which support the teaching and research of the University of Melbourne.

UoMC employs staff and holds assets (primarily the Hawthorn Campus). It also has a subsidiary company, UM Commercialisation Pty Ltd. This company has one purpose, to manage the shares held in the UM Commercialisation Trust.

UoM Commercial Ltd (UoMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of The University of Melbourne. UoMC operates on behalf of its owner, and therefore must comply with the Privacy Policy of The University of Melbourne. The University’s Privacy Policy is available via the privacy resource pages.

At times UoMC will operate in areas where other legislative requirements must be met, i.e. the Health Records Act as it relates to patient information at the Shepparton Medical Centre. Therefore the Company has its own Privacy Policy. Click here to view the UoMC Privacy Policy.
